Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica’s most visited national park, though it is also its smallest. Just south of the city of Quepos, this park covers over 4,000 hectares of stunning sights, among which include several beaches and nature trails.
As a nature reserve, Manuel Antonio’s main attraction is its spectacular biodiversity which includes 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. Various species of sloths and monkeys occupy this area, as do a host of reptile and bird species. Dolphins and the occasional migrating whale can also be seen here. Activities like hiking, snorkeling, and horseback riding all allow you to enjoy the wildlife while you’re here. For the more athletic, a variety of water sports like surfing and kayaking are also popular here.
As a popular beach resort area, you have a choice of the more pricey private villas, mid-range resorts, hotels, and vacation rentals, budget hostels and everything in between. It’s a matter of choosing what amenities you need or can’t do without, and then finding accommodations that will provide that. Be careful though when in the Playa Espadilla area, as the beach there contains large amounts of gray water and sewage runoff due to the lack of adequate sewage treatment.
