San Jose is Costa Rica’s capital city, and it is where most people enter the country before leaving for the other tourist spots. Before you leave San Jose though, it would be a good idea to get a glimpse of this Central American country’s city life and the hotspots that keep bringing people back here.
Travelers have many options as far as tourist attractions are concerned. If you want to get a feel for Costa Rica’s colonial period, Pueblo Antiguo, a theme park modeled after 19th century life which houses many museums, is a must visit. The Central Park, Plaza de la Cultura and the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica all regularly play host to cultural events, and are frequented by both locals and tourists. To experience San Jose’s nightlife, you must visit El Pueblo, a picturesque area with many establishments that stay open until the break of dawn. Calle de la Amargura is also a popular nightspot, and relatively less expensive, though you need to be more careful here as there are more pickpockets and petty criminals.
Your San Jose lodging options are of course quite varied in this nation’s capital. You have your choice between the high end hotels that have many amenities, mid-range apart-hotels and bed & breakfasts, to budget hostels and inns. San Jose has something for everyone. Don’t make the same mistake as some tourists though and expect to find beach resorts here, as San Jose is located in the mountains.
