Car Rentals in Costa Rica

While Costa Rica is one of the more developed nations in Central America, local public transportation leaves much to be desired, especially for the traveler who wishes to make the most of a short visit here. Renting a car is therefore highly advisable, as it will give you the flexibility to make spontaneous changes in your itinerary, and drive to more remote regions of the country.

Do note, however, that driving conditions may present challenges you are not normally accustomed to. Many travelers describe these inconveniences as tolerable, considering the overall benefits to a rental car. Nevertheless, it is important to understand what renting a car and driving in Costa Rica will involve.

Among the leading complaints expressed by drivers are:
* bad roads and potholes
* streets without signs
* lack of available road maps
* heavy traffic in the cities
* precarious night driving

Oftentimes large semi-trucks will drive at the slow pace of 20 mph, and hold back traffic on a narrow, two-lane, mountainous road at night. In general, it is recommended that you avoid night driving in Costa Rica, to ensure safety. While many do end up driving at night without any problems, remember that day driving will also let you see more of the gorgeous countryside.

While the cost might go up slightly, renting a 4x4 is ideal, since many of the roads are unpaved or underdeveloped, and many remote beaches are only accessible by 4x4 vehicles.

Save Money

When looking for a cheap car rental deal, often your best option is to rent a car in town, rather than at the airport. Prices tend to drop considerably, and easily justify the cost of a taxi into the center of town. You will also save time and energy by shopping around in advance. When booking a car rental ahead of time, ask if they will pick you up from the airport. Many companies offer this added convenience, to make your arrival here stress free.

Requirements

In order to rent a car in Costa Rica, you must be 21 or older, and have a valid driver’s license. An international license is not required, but is accepted. Car insurance and a deposit to cover the insurance company’s deductible is required, and is accepted in cash or credit. Depending on the policy of your car rental company and the type of vehicle you are driving, deductibles may reach as high as $2,000.
